Where Buffalo Roam – Pioneering Weight Loss - Part 1
One hundred and fifty years ago, Iowa’s 36 million acres were 85% covered with tall-grass prairie. It was a place that was home to hundreds of plant species, more than 350 types of birds, nearly 100 kinds of mammals, thousands of insects and a multitude of amphibians, reptiles and fish. As we drove 20 miles east of Des Moines, down a highway that was laid amidst cornfields, soybeans and timber, we began to think of the vastness and what it must have been like when the first settlers embarked on a journey across the plains. Sitting in a comfortable car with air conditioning, we had to strain for our minds to comprehend what it must have been like for these early pioneers. What kind of determination and strength of will they must have possessed to set out in covered wagons with hard board seats into a land where no town could be seen and not a soul existed anywhere in the distance. What amazing spirits and belief in their futures they must have summoned to trust their fate and future to the dreams that only their mind could envision. READ MORE... Now, I imagine you may be wondering what any of this has to do with weight loss. Simply put, it has to do with our mindset and the inner strength that exists within us.
Imagine for a moment what a pioneering family had to do to eat. Running water was in the form of a stream, brook, lake or pond. Wood had to be gathered for a campfire and, while some staples were packed for the trip, much of their food had to be foraged from their surroundings.
We, have the comforts of tap water, the luxury of turning on a stove and selecting our food from a local grocery store or farmer’s market. The convenience of pre-cut and washed vegetables and microwave preparation aids us in expediently performing our task. How much easier it is for us to prepare a healthy meal than it was for our ancestors. Shouldn’t we take the time … make the time … to do so?
Let’s embrace the pioneering spirit of those early settlers and move forward with the steadfast determination in which they embraced the prairie. Implement your strength of mind to eat nutritious food, exercise moderately and change your lifestyles.
Perhaps the strong will and faith they summoned in embracing their future and fulfilling their dreams can be used to inspire us to move forward in claiming ours! After all, if they can pave the way to a new land and a new life through all nature’s wonder and adversity, how can we do less for ourselves?

I have often contemplated such things myself. I watched a piece on the Histroy Channel about how some of the roads in this country were forged across the mountains and other tough terrain, in some cases taking as much as 5 years to get across just a few miles.They had only ox carts, man power and dynamite to move tons of earth. We are too soft today and appreciate so little the convienences we are privleged to have. I have to dig deep to cross my mountain but with all your support I know I can.

I agree! We have so much to be thankful for and it is due to our forefathers' hardships.
It's good to think of these things as it makes our own stressors seem trivial by nature.

I ALSO AGREE, AS EASY AS WE HAVE IT NOW,IT WAS SO HARD ON PEOPLE LONG AGO.MY HUSBAND AND I OWN A FEW OLD THINGS THEY USE TO USE IN THE OLDER DAYS.THEY USED WHAT THEY HAD,AND WAS WILLING TO WORK SO HARD TO GET TO WHERE THEY WANTED TO GO,IT HAD TO BE SO HARD TO RIDE THOSE CARTS,BUT THEY DIDN'T KNOW AT THAT TIME ANY OTHER WAY AS WE DO NOW.I HAVE SEEN A BUFFALO HEARD,AND WOULD LOVE TO OWN SOME BUFFALO.THIS STORY IS A PART OF HISTORY,SOMETHING EVERYONE SHOULD TRY AND SEE HARDSHIPS THEY WENT TOUGH TO BE IN A BETTER PLACE AND I AM SURE NOT MANY HAD WEIGHT TROUBLE AS WE DO TODAY.WE HAVE SO MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR,DUE TO THE HARD WORK OF OUR FOREFATHERS.WE SHOULD BE THANKFUL ALSO FOR EVERYTHING.I AM CROSSING MY MOUNTAINS ALSO,AND WITH THE SUPPORT AND HELP I GET ,I KNOW I WILL BE ABLE TO CLIMB THEM.
